Jim first installed SEL-251 relays at the City of Longmont Colorado in 1991 with special programming to reduce nuisance tripping. He has developed custom programming in
the user logic area of the SEL-451 relay to create impedance elements and other advanced proprietary relay elements to solve problems that arise in distribution protection.
He is also working on patents for other advanced distribution protection. The simple 50/51 overcurrent elements can now be coupled with these advanced elements to provide true smart grid
protection. Jim is working on a distribution relay based on a variable standard PLC platform.
