Transmission Line Protection Evaluation

Some transmission lines have not had their relay settings reevaluated for decades.   Many Utilities have standard settings they feel comfortable with.  Relays have been upgraded to microprocessor and settings were merely transferred over from the electromechanical, not taking advantage of the additional power of the new relay.

My transmission line review program takes your system drawings, operational experience, and problem history into account together with my experience to recommend what additional protection can be utilized including but not limited to:

  1.  Evaluation of current settings.  Zones of protection and backup overcurrent.

  2.  Reclosing evaluation.   Suggest advanced reclosing if appropriate.

  3.  Identify if transmission line is a candidate for advanced communication assisted tripping.

  4.  Identify if transmission line is a candidate for adaptive settings.

  5.  Identify if transmission line is a candidate for special impedance based elements or voltage supervised elements.

  6.  Suggest settings to alarm for a downed conductor.

  7.  Fix any history of operational problems with settings adjustments and additional elements.
